Wofford, Vera Dean, editor. Hale County Facts and Folklore. Lubbock, Texas: Pica Publishing Company, 1978.
Inspired by her mother, Annie Mae Nations Dean, Wofford began compiling "a general history and the stories of individuals who were a part of the birth and life of Hale County." In her foreword, Wofford describes this book as a "tribute to our Hale County Pioneers." Editor Wofford presents stories and articles from many contributors. While acknowledging what might be perceived as occasional discrepancies in details of names, dates, and places, Wofford comments, "But no matter, because the very diversity of recall by contributors demonstrates that one remembers events of history by the way they have affected his own life."
Included is a fourteen-page section titled "Mennonite Families of the Snyder Community." The material was prepared by Gladys Rastetter Mason, daughter of Ferdinand and Amanda Hartman Rastetter, Mennonite colonists. In addition to recording her own memories of growing up in the Snyder Community, Mrs. Mason wrote about other families, basing her articles on letters and interviews of other people who had lived there during the Mennonite years.
Members of the Hale County Historical Commission sponsored publication of the book. One of the acknowledged contributors to the project, Ramona Roberts of Plainview, Texas, generously donated to the Snyder Community Project a copy of this book and its companion: Wofford, Vera Dean, editor. Hale County Facts and Folklore, Vol. II. Dallas, Texas: Taylor Publishing Company, 1986.Both books are available for purchase through the Museum of the Llano Estacado in Plainview.
