John (1864-1940) and Sarah (Stouffer) (1869-1954) Hartzler

    John Hartzler's family is listed on the Snyder Community historical marker as "among the first Mennonites to settle this farming community."

The following information is from The Hertzler-Hartzler Family History:1 

John Hartzler, born May 25, 1864, in Urbana, Ohio, the son of Joel and Lydia (PLANK) HARTZLER; died Nov. 4, 1940 [Colorado Springs, Colorado]

m(1) 20 Jan 1892 to Elizabeth Alice "Lizzie" HARSHBARGER, born 4 March, 1864, in Mattawana, Pennsylvania, the daughter of Jonas and Pauline J. (YERGER) HARSHBARGER; died 17 Aug 1897. Children - Jonas H., Harry E., and Pauline May (Mrs. James A. Leroy) [Sarah Hartzler's obituary lists her stepdaughter Ada Ringler of Colorado Springs in 1954. I don't know who that is.]

m(2) Jan. 22, 1899 Sarah STOUFFER, born. Feb 24, 1869, in Columbiana, Ohio, the daughter of Henry and Elizabeth (BLOSSER) STOUFFER. Children - Lydia Elizabeth, born 3 Feb 1900, died 15 Aug 1927, unm. and Ada Naomi, born 25 Nov 1902

    John - aged 45, married eleven years, born in Ohio, both parents born in Pennsylvania, farmer on own account
    Sarah - aged 41, mother of two children, two children living, born in Ohio, both parents born in Ohio
    Lydia E. - 10-year-old daughter, born in Ohio
    Ada N. - 7-year-old daughter, born in Ohio
    Jonas H. - 16-year-old son, born in Ohio [his mother was John's first wife, Lizzie Harshbarger]
    [illegible] Harry E. - 14-year-old son, born in Ohio [his mother was John's first wife, Lizzie Harshbarger]
    May - 13-year-old daughter, born in Ohio [her mother was John's first wife, Lizzie Harshbarger]

1920 Federal census - West Liberty village, Logan County, Ohio
    John - aged 55, truck farmer on own account
    Sarah - aged 50
    Lydia - 19-year-old daughter
    Ada N. - 17-year-old daughter
